I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on this. Many a time I was asked what I did with my horse. I used to show and take lessons, and couldn't care less about a ribbon, I was just happy to have completed the course and stayed on and not made a complete fool of myself. After I retired Erik, my answer to the question 'what do you do' usually was, whatever I feel like doing today. So we had fun mostly and I think that's what everyone should do, if it's not fun then why bother. I guess when you are older as I am the whole competition thing comes into perspective and enjoying yourself and your horse is more important than any ribbon.

I agree it shouldn't matter what a person does with their horse as long as they are taking good care of it and both the horse and person are happy.

Excellent post with some very valid points. I have been the subject of a few of those "hairy eyeballs" when asked what my old Appy did.... at that point in his life, all he could do was be a handsome pasture puff.

I have always wanted my horses be trail worthy before they went into the show ring... At least when we got tired of the politics of showing we could hit the trails and have some real FUN!

Keep up the great work on your blog here. I look forward to seeing more of your thoughts in time!
