Although I haven’t yet really dug in to the subject, I am very interested in contemporary equine art. My taste is more towards the modern, post-modern, and abstract, but I’m open-minded. I had the thought that maybe I’d even like to start a gallery here, so if you all have a favorite artist you’d like to recommend, that would be great.
In the meantime, I found artist Barbara Rush, who has a self-described neo-cubist style:
It looks to me like she might be a dressage rider. What do you all think?

My favorite horse artist is George Stubbs, I guess I like the more classical art as opposed to the new modern types. I do like the Carol Greigg (I think that’s how you spell it) paintings with the horses and Native Americans too. I’m not much of an art critic and I should be because my daughter is a wonderful artist.
Is it cheeky of me to point out the the picture on the right has the horses hindquarters not engaged?? I tend to go for more classic realistic paintings. I’d love to get a portrait of my guys.
I love the art of Kim McElroy and Chris Cummings to name a couple. Both are realistic but then that’s my thing. Although Kim has done some fantasy stuff with horses and lions and even women that are really cool.
The woman who did the driftwood sculptures I posted a while back has really cool stuff as well. And there are some amazing bronzes that I love as well.
There are some great equine artists out there.
Oh geeze… of COURSe I have a brain fart when I need the name… lol.. I will look up the web site for the fellow that does some beautiful work in Atlanta GA. Its called “Blue HOrse Art”. Dont ask me what “style” it is- all I can tell you is its really cool!
Will get that to you soon as I can!
I’m with you jdp. Although realistic horse art is beautiful, my personal taste leans toward more stylized/expressive work. A favorite is Leslie Anne Webb, not just her work but also her story and mission. I also love vintage/antique prints.
Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about Barbara Rush’s work, but I did think it was interesting.
GHM, I will definitely look up the artists you mentioned – I think the majority of people prefer realism a/o classical styles. What medium does your daughter work in?
Beckz, You are always cheeky – that’s why we like you! Plus, you’re right!
MiKael, I think I must have missed the driftwood sculptures – I will look that up on your blog! I am not caught up on all past entries, especially for prolific posters like yourself.
Mrs Mom, I will certainly take a peek at Blue Horse Art when I get home. Working and blogging – even though we are allowed – isn’t working for me. Too scattered.
Michelle, Thanks for the great link. I hope to have my laptop back tonight so I can check out all these artists and catch up on all my blog reading!
My daughter works in oils mostly. I wish I could get her to do a picture of my horse for me, but she never has the time, she works all day and does a lot of the work at the farm when she gets home and on the weekends. It’s hard to never have a day off.
The header picture here is excellent, I would love to be able to paint like this
My favorite equine art is realistic but loose. Have you seen Elin Pendelton’s work? I enjoy her paintings.
